  112. # [14:38] <MikeSmith> http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html-diffs/ is where all the fun is
  113. # [14:39] <anne> http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html-diffs/2008Jul/0051.html has encoding issues
  114. # [14:41] <MikeSmith> anne: yeah, I'll fix that
  115. # [14:41] <MikeSmith> anyway, the Web Sockets announcement that went to the whatwg list should also have been posted to public-html
  116. # [14:41] <Julian> Mike: the commit messages do not carry the rational for a change. Not sure about the W3C, but in IETF land we would be in trouble if we'd accept input that ddin't go through the right mailing list and it's IP policy.
  117. # [14:45] <MikeSmith> Julian: I agree that all changes to draft documents should ideally have a documented rationale. But I know of no W3C policy that explicitly requires that we must document rationale for all changes, nor one that says that editors absolutely cannot accept input from other than a blessed mailing list.
  118. # [14:45] <MikeSmith> if we were to apply such a policy, we'd have more specs with issues about that than just HTML5
  119. # [14:46] <anne> MikeSmith, I agree with that
  120. # [14:47] * Joins: aaronlev (chatzilla@78.51.64.41)
  121. # [14:47] <anne> MikeSmith, major new features definitely need to go to both lists and ideally Hixie takes care of that
  122. # [14:48] <MikeSmith> I suspect that in this case, Hixie's reasoning was that we had never had discussion about the Connection stuff on public-html ever
  123. # [14:49] <MikeSmith> because it was in the spec at the time we adopted it, and nothing had really changed in it since
  124. # [14:49] <MikeSmith> but I still think it should have been announced
  125. # [14:49] <MikeSmith> because I know a few people who thought it was something completely new
  126. # [14:49] <anne> I think he just replies to a set of e-mails and includes all e-mail addresses those e-mails included, which would indeed exclude public-html in this case, but given that he basically rewrote the feature, public-html should've been included
  127. # [14:49] <MikeSmith> that had just been added
  128. # [14:50] <MikeSmith> anne: right
  129. # [14:59] <MikeSmith> anne: about the encoding issue with the diffs: Those diffs are UTF-8 and I just have my script set to suck them in as-is
  130. # [15:00] <MikeSmith> but the server seems to serve up archived mail messages with no encoding set
  131. # [15:01] <MikeSmith> so it just uses whatever your browser's default encoding is set to
  132. # [15:01] <MikeSmith> as far as I can see
  133. # [15:01] <MikeSmith> so set your default to UTF-8 :)
  134. # [15:20] <gDashiva> Maybe Hixie should try CC-ing public-html on everything for a week, just so people could make an informed judgement :)
  135. # [15:46] <MikeSmith> anne: fwiw, I fixed the encoding issue with the embedded diffs
