An image matrix used for navigation

Cutting down on server trips and no need to preload images or whatever.

The following technique is (amongst other places on the web) used on lisettedezoete.nl.

PC IE 5+, Mozilla, Opera, Safari and Camino. Mac Explorer probably breaks horribly :).
