  92. # [18:21] <anne> gsnedders, for ETag you simply store the literal value and for Content-Type you need to further process it, afaict
  93. # [18:21] <gsnedders> anne: yeah, I know. But what about other headers? Is there any general rule?
  94. # [18:23] <anne> I don't think so, it's up to the semantics of the header afaict
  95. # [18:25] <gsnedders> anne: the Content-Type definition says nothing about it
  96. # [18:27] <anne> Aren't there some notes that "test" and test are equivalent unless otherwise noted?
  97. # [18:27] <anne> Not for Content-Type in particular, but somewhere in the grammar rules
  98. # [18:27] <gsnedders> anne: not that I've ever seen
  99. # [18:28] <gsnedders> anne: "A string of text is parsed as a single word if it is quoted using double-quote marks" is the closest you ever get to such a statement
  100. # [18:29] <anne> hmm, I was thinking of implied *LWS it seems
  101. # [18:29] <anne> which does mention quoted-string
  102. # [18:29] <anne> you could join the HTTP WG and raise this as issue
  103. # [18:30] <gsnedders> yeah, it's probably worth raising if nobody can give a simple answer from the spec
  104. # [18:32] <gsnedders> current rfc2616bis draft doesn't help the issue either
  105. # [18:33] <gsnedders> (nice to see someone sane actually reads my blog, though)
  106. # [18:34] * anne followed a link from #whatwg
  107. # [18:35] <gsnedders> anne: ah. I made the assumption you didn't from the change of channel
  108. # [18:35] <anne> well, the archives
  109. # [18:36] <gsnedders> ah, yeah. you can't get on freenode, can you?
  110. # [18:36] <anne> right
  111. # [18:37] * gsnedders goes back to concluding nobody sane reads his blog :)
  112. # [18:38] <Philip> gsnedders: You're using a font which gets rendered uglily for me :-(
  113. # [18:38] <Philip> (i.e. without antialiasing)
  114. # [18:38] <gsnedders> Philip: which font? where? all of them have about five fallbacks :P
  115. # [18:40] <Philip> Seems to be Helvetica
  116. # [18:41] * Philip has no idea why his computer can handle every font except for Helvetica nicely
  117. # [18:41] * gsnedders blames Philip's computer
  118. # [18:42] <Philip> Hmm, "Times" is ugly too
  119. # [18:43] * Philip blames it as well :-)
  120. # [18:58] <Philip> gsnedders: By the way, the hCards on comments seem to be invalid, since they say class="vcard fn" but the spec says properties are found in elements matching ".vcard .fn"
  121. # [18:59] <Philip> (which causes Operator to say "Required property fn not specified")
  122. # [18:59] <gsnedders> so I need a subelement? yay.
  123. # [19:02] <Philip> or a superelement
  124. # [19:05] <gsnedders> Philip: better now?
  125. # [19:10] <Philip> gsnedders: Yes, although relying on the 'implied "n" optimization' is probably dangerous since it'll be invalid if someone has a three-word name (assuming you're not already doing anything fancier in that case)
  126. # [19:11] <gsnedders> Philip: what do you suggest I do instead?
  127. # [19:11] <Philip> (and it possibly-incorrectly interprets single-word "fn"s as "nickname")
  128. # [19:12] <Philip> I don't know, I'm just complaining rather than being constructive :-p
  129. # [19:12] <gsnedders> looking through the latest comments only one is wrong
  130. # [19:12] <gsnedders> Robin isn't a nickname, apparently :P
  131. # [19:14] <Philip> If you don't have people's names in a family+given+additional+... format, and hCard requires names in that format, then it seems hCard isn't a very good fit for that situation
  132. # [19:17] <gsnedders> In short, the post raises the issue of the meaning of double quotes. If you parse them out, you end up with Etag: W/"a" and Etag: "W/a" equivalent. If you don't, you can end up with character sets such as "UTF-8" (i.e., including the quotation marks) in headers like Content-Type: text/plain;charset="UTF-8". What is the expected behaviour for quoted-string (or, if need be, for each and every specification that uses quoted-string)?
  133. # [19:17] <gsnedders> that sound all right?
