  98. # [23:39] <landongn> afternoon all
  99. # [23:40] <landongn> Would anyone mind helping me wrap my head around z-indicies using canvas elements?
  100. # [23:48] <Philip> landongn: What kind of problem are you having with it?
  101. # [23:48] <landongn> hi Philip
  102. # [23:49] <landongn> I'm drawing a few images to a canvas, but they seem to randomly be ordered on the z plane
  103. # [23:49] <landongn> e.g, image 1 overlaps 2, refresh, and 2 overlaps 1
  104. # [23:49] <landongn> can i use the css property for zindex as i draw my images?
  105. # [23:49] <landongn> or is there a better way?
  106. # [23:50] <Philip> Is it a single canvas element?
  107. # [23:51] <landongn> it is, yes
  108. # [23:51] <Philip> The canvas is just a flat bitmap, it doesn't have layers - whatever is drawn second will be on top of whatever was drawn first
  109. # [23:51] <landongn> Should i be using overlapping individual canvases?
  110. # [23:51] <landongn> or is there a method of ordering the draws in a particular order?
  111. # [23:52] <Philip> Are you drawing the two images in an unpredictable order (e.g. calling drawImage in the onload of each image)?
  112. # [23:52] <landongn> just a moment..
  113. # [23:53] <landongn> http://pastebin.com/jfSpk933
  114. # [23:53] <pimpbot> Title: JavaScript | //factoid dimensions and alp - Anonymous - jfSpk933 - Pastebin.com (at pastebin.com)
  115. # [23:56] <landongn> i'm not sure if this is the right place to ask for this sort of assistance to be honest
  116. # [23:56] <landongn> but would appreciate any help you could offer
  117. # [23:56] <Philip> Ah, yeah, it looks like you're calling drawImage in onload
  118. # [23:57] <Philip> and there's no guarantees on the order in which the images will be loaded
  119. # [23:57] <landongn> When i tried to do a drawimage outside of the 'onload' i kept getting exceptions in firefox
  120. # [23:57] <Philip> That would make it try to draw the image before it's finished loading, which will fail
  121. # [23:58] <Philip> What you probably want to do is wait until all of the images have loaded, and then do all of the drawing at once
  122. # [23:59] <landongn> Is it possible to overlap canvases on top of one another? similar to how photoshop uses layers, so to speak?
  123. # Session Close: Sat Apr 24 00:00:00 2010

The end :)
