  10. # [00:50] <ato> gsnedders: Perhaps AutomatedTester meant “pint”?
  11. # [00:51] <AutomatedTester> no, meant paint
  12. # [00:51] <AutomatedTester> I assumed the list that odinho was asking jgraham to subscribe to had a lot of bikeshedding in it
  13. # [00:52] <AutomatedTester> if jgraham joined that list he would need more paint
  14. # [00:52] <jgraham> Pints of paint?
  15. # [00:53] <AutomatedTester> maybe
  16. # [00:53] <AutomatedTester> who knows
  17. # [00:54] <jgraham> I don't actually think this thread is bikeshedding, for the record
  18. # [00:54] <jgraham> There are real difficulties with testing w/encryption that aren't solved yet
  19. # [00:54] <AutomatedTester> I just assumed it was a since its a W3C mailing list :)
  20. # [00:55] <AutomatedTester> ahh
  21. # [00:55] <gsnedders> jgraham: That's why you should formally verify encryption stuff
  22. # [00:55] <jgraham> But I don't want the webappssec to ghettoise themselves and develop a solution that's not very useful
  23. # [00:55] * Joins: ptressel (~chatzilla@public.cloak)
  24. # [00:55] <gsnedders> (I'm only partially joking here)
  25. # [00:56] <jgraham> gsnedders: You are like Rapunzel in that ivory tower
  26. # [00:56] <gsnedders> Most crypto stuff isn't actually that hard to prove secure, provided you start with a design with that in mind
  27. # [00:56] <jgraham> That could be true
  28. # [00:56] <jgraham> The difficulty is usually "start"
  29. # [00:57] * Quits: AutomatedTester (~AutomatedTester@public.cloak) (Client closed connection)
  30. # [00:57] <gsnedders> I don't think the GnuTLS verification effort is having too many design-related issues, from what I've heard
  31. # [00:57] <gsnedders> But that's all pretty quiet
  32. # [00:57] <jgraham> Rather than "inherit a decades old codebase written in C by mathematicians who once took a programming course"
  33. # [00:58] <ato> I've met too many GnuTLS maintainers to have an opinion on this matter.
  34. # [00:58] <gsnedders> I think OpenSSL may be practically impossible (too many compile and runtime switches, etc.), but GnuTLS is definitely doable. NSS likely is too.
  35. # [00:58] <gsnedders> ato: Oh, there are sure problems with GnuTLS. :)
  36. # [00:59] <gsnedders> ato: But if it can be proven secure, that does at least give a fair bit of confidence.
  37. # [00:59] <gsnedders> (Note that most of these efforts are primarily concerned with is X secure, not whether X is a conforming implementation of Y.)
  38. # [01:00] <gsnedders> (but the tools typically used can also be used to show two systems are equivilent)
  39. # [01:01] <gsnedders> </soapbox>
  40. # [01:01] <gsnedders> (Though yes, I do realize this doesn't really work with closed-source crypto systems, but anything black-box is equally questionable.)
