Yeah, why use CSS for this at all? This is way uglier! :-)
There are 9 items and 2 elements; SMALL
and BIG
. So each side gets 4 items of each, or something. Here's the idea in some code:

Not too beautiful if you've got like 100+ tags, but it's valid :-)
